HOUSTON’S NEWS

FEDERAL CASE: SAUCE FACTORY CO-FOUNDER PLEADS GUILTY

🚔 One of the founders tied to the Sauce Factory, a Houston-born record label long linked to crime, pleaded guilty in federal court. Antonio Hopkins Yezeno, 36, admitted selling large amounts of marijuana and meth to undercover officers in 2021. Police also found nearly 1,200 grams of meth pills during a traffic stop.

He faces a minimum of 10 years in prison, up to life, and a possible $10 million fine. He is set to be sentenced in June.

ALL JACKED UP TAKES TOP PRIZE AT HOUSTON WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP BAR-B-QUE

HOUSTON AREA SCHOOL LEADER WINS NATIONAL SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

📖 A Houston area school leader is getting national recognition. Roosevelt Nivens, superintendent of Lamar CISD, was named National Superintendent of the Year in February by the School Superintendents Association. He leads one of the fastest-growing districts in the region, serving more than 46,000 students across 49 campuses, with enrollment expected to climb sharply in the coming years.

Since taking the role in 2021, Nivens has focused on planning for growth, building new schools and forming community partnerships to support students. He began his career as a teacher in 1996 and says he wanted to have a bigger impact on students’ lives.

HOUSTON TO BREAK GROUND ON SERGIO RODRIGUEZ MEMORIAL BRIDGE NEAR MILBY HIGH

🚶 A new $5.6 million pedestrian bridge near Milby High School is set to begin construction in June, nearly three years after student Sergio Rodriguez was killed crossing the tracks. The bridge, which will be named in his honor, is expected to be finished by December 2027 and aims to protect students walking over the busy rail line at Galveston and Harding.

Across town, plans for a similar bridge near McReynolds Middle School have been canceled after Houston ISD voted to close the campus. Leaders say the Milby project is a lasting commitment to student safety. Parents can take heart knowing change is coming.

Houston upstream stocks moved higher too, led by APA Corp., up 7.08% from Feb. 27 close to March 2 open. Watch for spillover risks to Houston-based oilfield service giants and possible cyber threats to U.S. power infrastructure.
