A Houston firefighter was taken to a hospital after twisting an ankle while crews fought a fire at an abandoned former school on Center Street late Saturday. Houston Fire Department crews were sent to the 3200 block around 11:45 p.m. and found flames inside the building.

Firefighters first entered the building to attack the fire, but they later pulled back and switched to defensive operations. Crews expected to remain at the scene into Sunday morning to fully put out the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Houston children received backpacks and life advice Sunday at the second annual Back-to-School Huddle Backpack Blitz. The event at the Houston Texans YMCA included 250 backpacks, free haircuts, physicals and lunch for children who had experienced foster care or had a parent in prison.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud joined Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare, city Controller Chris Hollins and recent Jones Futures Academy valedictorian Micah Mason. A panel focused on staying in school, handling obstacles and showing resilience. The YMCA, C.J. Stroud Foundation and several local groups helped organize the event.

A powerful heat dome will push Houston temperatures close to or above 100 degrees through much of the work week. Forecasters said an upper-level ridge will strengthen over Texas, bringing hotter afternoons and heat index values that may feel even more dangerous.

Rain chances will stay low while the ridge remains in place, giving the area little relief from the heat. Residents should expect the hottest stretch of the summer so far and take steps to limit time outside during the warmest part of the day. The forecast calls for the extreme heat to continue through the week.

Baytown police opened internal and criminal reviews after an officer was accused of possibly misusing the city’s Flock license plate camera system. Police Chief John Stringer announced the investigation and asked the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to help determine whether any laws were broken.

The officer has not been publicly identified. The department said the internal affairs review will examine whether policies were violated, while the separate criminal investigation will focus on possible illegal conduct. Officials did not release details about the alleged searches or explain how the camera system may have been used. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Galveston County deputies served five search warrants and arrested a 22-year-old woman during a coordinated drug investigation. Authorities said the searches took place in Texas City, La Marque and Dickinson and uncovered about 11 pounds of methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana and more than 500 pills.

Investigators also reported finding a firearm, body armor, a pill press and cash. Mone Ford faces drug delivery charges, and her total bond was set at $2 million, according to authorities. The investigation involved several local and federal agencies. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Houston honored barbecue founder John Toomey as he celebrated his 98th birthday and five years since opening J-Bar-M Barbecue. Toomey opened the East End restaurant when he was 93 and still visits regularly to greet customers, check the food and talk with employees.

Friends, family and community leaders surprised him with a birthday celebration. The city proclaimed the occasion John J. Toomey Day, and the University of Houston also recognized him. The article highlighted Toomey’s long career in business and law, along with his support for Houston organizations and causes over several decades.

Max’s Wine Dive has reopened on Washington Avenue under new ownership after quietly welcoming customers back in mid-July. Owner Christopher Gonzalez acquired the restaurant in April and plans a larger grand-opening celebration in early August.

The restaurant is keeping familiar favorites, including its fried chicken, while adding new dishes inspired by Houston. A new chef team is leading the kitchen as the business works to rebuild its place in the neighborhood. Gonzalez said the comeback also includes changes in management and service. The reopening brings the longtime wine bar and comfort-food restaurant back to its original Houston corridor.
