Hundreds of goats are headed back to the Houston Arboretum from Aug. 4 through Aug. 11. A herd of 300 to 400 animals will graze across seven acres near the Ravine, the 610 Parking Loop, and the Event Lawn.

The goats will eat thick brush, poison ivy, ragweed, and invasive plants on slopes that are hard for crews and machines to reach. This method cuts the need for chemicals and heavy equipment. Visitors may watch and take photos, but staff asks everyone not to touch, approach, or feed the goats.

Houston's short break from brutal heat is ending as Bertha's clouds and showers fade. High pressure will build over Texas, sending weekend temperatures close to 100F and cutting rain chances. Friday's heat index was expected to reach 105F to 110F.

Forecast models point to several straight triple-digit days next week. One model keeps highs near 100F to 101F, while another reaches about 103F. Warm nights will offer little relief as clearer skies and stronger sunshine settle over the region again.

Two teenage girls died after fleeing a vehicle following a Houston police chase Thursday night, according to investigators. Police said the case began with an alleged shoplifting call. After a pursuit and a minor crash, four people left the vehicle and ran across highways near downtown.

The girls, ages 15 and 16, were struck while crossing southbound Highway 288 and died at the scene. A 30-year-old woman and another 16-year-old were taken into custody and charged with evading arrest. Police have not identified the teens involved.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Katy's main food pantry has nearly doubled its space as local hunger grows. Katy Christian Ministries said demand doubled in nine months. Its expanded 13,000-square-foot food center now includes a grocery-style shopping area, warehouse space, and larger refrigerators and freezers.

The center currently serves about 130 to 150 cars during morning drive-through hours. Leaders hope to reach 225 to 250 families a day and extend service into the afternoon. A Houston Food Bank grant helped fund the work. The center held a ribbon cutting July 15 and now opens four mornings each week.

Four relatives in Montgomery County tested positive for measles after exposure to an infected traveler from another state, health officials said. None of the family members had been vaccinated. One woman between ages 20 and 30 was hospitalized.

Measles symptoms often appear seven to 14 days after exposure and can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a spreading rash. Officials ask anyone with possible symptoms to isolate and call a health provider before arriving. Vaccination remains the strongest protection, especially for families planning travel or gathering in crowded places.

Houston-based Chord Energy has scheduled its next quarterly update for investors. The company plans to release second-quarter financial and operating results after the market closes on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Executives will hold a conference call at 10 a.m. Central on Thursday, Aug. 6, followed by an online replay. Chord Energy is an independent oil and gas producer focused on the Williston Basin. The announcement does not include earnings figures yet, but it gives shareholders and Houston's energy community firm dates for the company's next performance report and management discussion.

Wah Coffee is opening its third Houston-area shop in Sugar Land. The cafe's grand opening is Saturday, July 25, at 6560 Greatwood Parkway, Suite 100. Its two other locations are in Montrose and Richmond.

The menu mixes familiar coffee drinks with matcha and chai, plus flavors such as tiramisu and banana. Food options are also available. The expansion gives Greatwood-area residents another local place for morning drinks, study sessions, or casual meetups without driving farther into Houston. The new shop joins the brand’s existing locations in Montrose and Richmond.
