The Houston Fire Department welcomed the National EMS Memorial Moving Honors procession to Station 102 in honor of Firefighter Paramedic Stephen Scott. Scott died in the line of duty on September 17, 2025, after a medical emergency on September 14.

Two of his three children, Caleb and Savannah, joined the department for the tribute. Scott entered the department in 1997 and served at Station 102 in Kingwood since 2008. HFD said his legacy of hard work, honor, and service will never be forgotten.

Houston officials introduced new work to restore Riceville Cemetery near South Gessner and West Bellfort, a historic site tied to one of Houston’s oldest Black settlements. Riceville is one of Houston’s first freedom colonies, founded by Black Texans in the 19th century, and the cemetery dates to the 1880s.

The work includes a new mural commissioned by Council Member Edward Pollard and created with Riceville Mount Olive Baptist Church. It honors the cemetery and the Rice family, who founded the area.

Discovery Green will close early Saturday night at the request of the Houston Police Department, with the park shutting down at 8:30 p.m. Park officials also canceled Flea by Night and the Screen on the Green showing of Bend It Like Beckham.

The move comes after Houston police said more than 500 teenagers gathered there on June 13, shots were fired while officers dispersed the crowd, and six juveniles were arrested. The park is expected to reopen Sunday at 6 a.m.

Neighbors outside Angleton raised concerns after power poles were again seen leaning over County Road 210 in rural Brazoria County. Residents told ABC13 the poles first fell during Hurricane Beryl in 2024, were repaired, fell again, and were repaired again in 2025.

CenterPoint said recent ground saturation and high winds may be the reason the poles are leaning now. The company said it would send a crew back to set the poles upright, though a technician said they were not currently at a dangerous angle.

Fort Bend County library staff said they were told at the last minute that a planned three-day Juneteenth weekend was canceled. ABC13 reported that all library locations were told to open Saturday, even though the library website had previously shown a three-day closure.

A spokesperson for interim Judge Daniel Wong said the library director did not get proper approval for the closure. Director Roosevelt Weeks apologized in an email, saying he understood that many staff members had already made plans.

Federal prosecutors accused a Pearland clinic owner of submitting massive fraudulent health care claims through Wound Medic and three other clinics in Nevada, California, and Hawaii. Investigators said Marizel Yukee, a Las Vegas nurse, was indicted Thursday in federal court in Houston.

Prosecutors allege Yukee and unnamed co-conspirators submitted $906 million in fraudulent Medicare and Tricare claims from October 2023 to April 2025. The indictment says the government paid $297 million, while Yukee did not respond to ABC13’s request for comment.

Texas added 17,800 jobs in May, pushing total nonfarm employment to a record 14.4 million jobs, according to FOX 26. The report, based on information from the Texas Governor’s Office and the Texas Workforce Commission, said the state’s annual job growth rate hit 0.7 percent, more than double the national rate.

The statewide unemployment rate held steady at 4.3 percent. Officials said the civilian labor force grew to nearly 15.9 million workers, with employment estimates subject to revision.
