Firefighters Rescue Man From House Fire
Houston firefighters pulled a man from a home in the 15000 block of Buxley early Wednesday. Crews arrived around 1:17 a.m. and found heavy fire inside the house. They removed the man before switching to a defensive firefighting operation.
The man was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The Houston Fire Department is investigating what caused the fire.

Solar Flare Festival Sets 40-Artist Lineup
Houston Music Classifieds is bringing back its Solar Flare Music Festival with more than 40 artists at Axelrad Beer Garden. The two-day event is set for Aug. 28 and 29. Confirmed performers include Swimwear Department, Psychedelic Maggot Engine, Blossom Aloe and Hasaan Olu.
The festival will also feature an artist market and special activities after midnight. It is open to all ages, but guests younger than 18 must attend with an adult. Tickets range from $20 to $35, and the final band is scheduled to perform at midnight.
Major Changes Coming to HISD Schools
Houston ISD families will see major changes when the 2026-27 school year begins. The district plans 12 campus closures or co-locations affecting nearly 3,000 students. It is also consolidating special education services that serve about 5,000 students and placing more campuses under nonprofit management.
Nine schools will join the New Education System, while nine others will enter the Future 2.0 model. About 10,000 teachers will move to performance-based pay ranging from $70,000 to $101,000, with raises capped at $6,000. HISD also expects to spend $3.3 million on Bluebonnet Learning materials for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Pelvic Health Practice Opens in Cypress
West Pelvic Wellness opened its new Cypress practice in May, expanding care for people dealing with pelvic health concerns. The clinic offers pelvic floor physical therapy for pregnancy, postpartum recovery and symptoms linked to endometriosis.
The practice also treats urinary leakage, painful intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse and other pelvic health issues. Owner Dr. Brittney West first opened a Houston location in 2022 before expanding to Cypress. The new office is at 16718 House & Hahl Road, Suite M1, and appointments are available by phone or online.
Four Measles Cases Confirmed in Montgomery County
State health officials confirmed four measles cases in Montgomery County, including three children and one adult. The Texas Department of State Health Services said the cases are connected and that the people had traveled internationally before becoming sick.
Officials said measles is highly contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash. DSHS urged people with possible symptoms to call a health care provider before arriving so the office can limit exposure to others. The agency also recommended vaccination as the best protection against the disease.

Green Room Earns Praise, With Room to Grow
The Green Room pairs a lush setting with a short, creative menu in the Heights. The 26-seat restaurant opened in March at 1343 Yale Street and is part of Doke Concepts. Head chef and part-owner Daniel Davidson leads the kitchen.
Houston Chronicle restaurant critic Bao Ong gave the restaurant one star, which means good and recommended under the paper’s rating system. He praised the atmosphere, service and several dishes, but found some plates inconsistent. The review suggests the young restaurant has strong ideas and room to sharpen its execution as it settles into its first year.
Wild Eggs Plans First Texas Location
Wild Eggs plans to bring its first Texas restaurant to Cypress in early 2027. The breakfast, brunch and lunch concept will open in the Boardwalk at Towne Lake development, according to company information.
The menu includes omelets, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, salads and other daytime favorites. The Kentucky-based brand operates locations in several states and is known for creative breakfast dishes and a full-service dining experience. The Cypress restaurant is planned for 9945 Barker Cypress Road, Suite 122, adding another brunch option to the growing Towne Lake area.

Texans and Stroud Talk New Contract
Texans general manager Nick Caserio says the team has had productive contract talks with quarterback C.J. Stroud. A new deal could happen before training camp or while camp is underway, but Caserio said the team will not rush the process.
Stroud remains under contract through the 2027 season after Houston exercised his fifth-year option. He said he is focused on football and letting his representatives handle negotiations. In 2025, Stroud threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Texans are expected to build their offense around him as they prepare for the new season.
UH Adds Veteran Receiver Trent Walker
University of Houston added veteran receiver Trent Walker after he spent four seasons at Oregon State. The former walk-on caught 149 passes for 1,724 yards over the past two seasons, including seven catches for 103 yards against Houston last year.
Walker is expected to compete for the No. 2 receiver role behind Amare Thomas. His path included working jobs, such as flipping burgers and officiating youth sports, to help pay tuition before he earned a scholarship. Now in his fifth college season, he brings experience and production to a Houston offense looking for dependable targets.
