HOUSTON’S NEWS
Meter Mix-Up Spans Years
A west Houston man says he discovered that the meter number on his electric bill did not match the meter at his home. Peter Yang said he may have paid another customer’s bill for 15 to 20 years. He noticed the problem after switching electricity providers and checking the meter himself.
Yang filed a complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas. CenterPoint replaced the meter and told him he was owed a credit, but the amount remains unclear. CenterPoint apologized and said it is working with Yang on a solution.
Houston Gears Up for 713 Day
Houston’s original area code is becoming the center of celebrations across the city. Although 713 Day falls on July 13, some events and specials begin July 11. Hou City Fest will offer free Houston-themed entertainment, live music, vendors, food, DJs, lowriders and other activities on July 12.
Other options include special admission prices at the Houston Zoo, Houston Botanic Garden and Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. Meow Wolf will hold a weekend celebration, while restaurants and businesses will offer $7.13 food, drinks, tickets and other deals.
Sixteen Parasite Cases Confirmed
Houston health officials have confirmed sixteen cyclosporiasis cases inside the city. Harris County Public Health partners have confirmed another 18 cases. Officials said they have not found an unusual increase compared with recent years, a common source or a connection between the local cases and cases elsewhere.
Cyclosporiasis is a stomach illness caused by eating produce or drinking water contaminated with the cyclospora parasite. Symptoms can include watery diarrhea, tiredness, loss of appetite and stomach cramps. Officials recommend washing raw produce with tap water and washing hands with soap and water before eating.

AROUND THE METRO
Region Seeks Congestion Feedback
The Houston-Galveston Area Council is asking residents to share their experiences with traffic congestion. The online survey takes about 10 minutes and will remain open through July 15. The feedback is part of the agency’s Regional Congestion Management process.
H-GAC is developing a Congestion Management Plan to better understand travel and traffic problems across the Houston-Galveston region. The plan will consider Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller counties. H-GAC serves as a regional organization where local governments work together on issues affecting the wider area.
Two Injured in Alvin Shooting
A man and a juvenile were found with gunshot wounds Wednesday on Rolling Meadow Street in Alvin, near SH 35 and FM 2403. Brazoria County deputies responded and found both injured people. Their conditions were not available when the report was published.
Investigators believe the shooting was isolated and said there was no threat to others in the area. Officials were working to identify a suspect, and no one involved had been publicly identified. Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at 979-864-2256. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

BUSINESS UPDATE
Baker Hughes Cuts 174 Houston Jobs
Baker Hughes plans to lay off 174 workers at its Emmott Road facility in northwest Houston, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. The cuts affect manufacturing, engineering, materials, purchasing and other support teams. Employees have already been notified.
The facility is a 171,600-square-foot manufacturing and testing site. Baker Hughes said it regularly reviews its operations to remain positioned for customers and long-term growth. The company described the decisions as difficult and said it considered the effects on workers, communities and customers. The notice said the cuts could qualify as a mass layoff or plant closing.
Oakley Heads to the Heights
Oakley plans to open a new store at the M-K-T shopping center in the Heights. The 2,297-square-foot space at 600 N. Shepherd Drive is undergoing about $500,000 in renovations. Construction began in May and was expected to finish in July.
The store will sell performance eyewear, prescription and custom glasses, backpacks, clothing and shoes. It will also feature technology for shoppers, including a Prizm Wall that shows how Prizm lenses change color, contrast and detail. Smart Shopper technology will allow customers to explore Oakley products digitally while inside the store.

Rice women’s basketball will join a two-year scheduling partnership involving the American Conference, Atlantic 10, Ivy League and Missouri Valley Conference. Rice and South Florida will represent the American in the alliance, which begins with the 2026-27 season.
The Owls will play Murray State on November 6 and Richmond on November 8 at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia. The opening-weekend event includes eight teams, with two selected from each conference. Rice coach Lindsay Edmonds said the partnership provides chances to play strong opponents, improve schedules and strengthen NCAA Tournament résumés.
