HOUSTON’S NEWS
HOUSTON PARENTS PROTEST TO SAVE PORT HOUSTON ELEMENTARY
🏫 Parents showed up outside Port Houston Elementary on Friday after hearing the school could be shut down next year. Houston ISD leaders say falling enrollment and old buildings are behind the proposal. If it moves forward, students would be sent to Pleasantville Elementary, a little more than a mile away. The school board is expected to vote on the plan February 26.
For families there, the school feels bigger than just classrooms. Some parents say they only learned about the possible closure recently and want more of a voice before a decision is made. A group of parents plans to walk the route to Pleasantville on Monday morning to show what the new trip to school might look like for kids.
JUDGE STOPS DEI BAN ENFORCEMENT IN HOUSTON AND KATY ISDS
🛑 A federal judge has stepped in to stop Houston and Katy school districts from enforcing parts of a new Texas law tied to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in schools. The decision came Friday after civil rights groups filed a lawsuit challenging the law.
For now, several rules in the law cannot be carried out in those districts. The case centers on student clubs, classroom topics, and how schools handle certain identity issues. The judge’s order could remain in place while the lawsuit continues.
HOW HOUSTON AREA SCHOOLS ARE PROTECTING TEXAS FARMING TRADITIONS
🐓 As subdivisions spread across the Houston area, some schools are making sure agriculture is not forgotten. Districts like Katy, Humble, Klein, Spring and Aldine still run livestock shows, FFA chapters and agriculture classes that give students real experience raising animals.
For many kids, it is something they had never seen before. Teachers say the programs help students understand the land around them. Some even decide they want a future in agriculture after getting involved.
HOUSTON TRAVELERS GET RELIEF AS TSA PRECHECK REMAINS OPEN
✈️ Early Sunday, it looked like TSA PreCheck lanes might close at airports across the country, including Houston. The plan was tied to the ongoing government funding lapse. But a few hours later, officials changed course and said the program would stay open for now.
So, travelers can still use the faster security line. Global Entry is still paused, but PreCheck is continuing while TSA reviews staffing and resources.

HOUSTON BUSINESS NEWS
NEW HOUSTON CHEFS OPEN RESTAURANTS
🍕 Opening a restaurant right now takes guts. Prices are up and many places are shutting their doors. Even so, a few Houston chefs are pressing ahead. New spots like Flor y Miel, Yuma, and Angie’s Pizza are all working toward opening soon.
For the owners, it is a mix of nerves and excitement. Some are using their savings. Others are building on years of pop-ups and kitchen work. They know the risk, but they believe their ideas can find a home in Houston.
HOUSTON COMEDY CLUB FEELS IMPACT OF I-45 EXPANSION
🤣 The Secret Group comedy club in Houston’s East End is still open, but the huge I-45 expansion is making things tough. Construction right outside the building has made it harder for people to reach the venue, and some nearby businesses have already closed or moved.
The club’s owner says fewer customers have been showing up as the work continues. For now, the plan is simple. Keep hosting shows and hope Houstonians keep coming out to support live comedy and music.
HOUSTON SPORTS NEWS
CURLING FINDS A HOME IN HOUSTON AT LOCAL ICE RINK
🥌 When the Winter Olympics roll around, a lot of people suddenly notice curling. What many do not realize is that Houston has its own curling club. At the Bellerive Ice Center in southwest Houston, players slide 42-pound stones across the ice while teammates sweep to guide the shot.
The sport has been around for centuries, and the local club has existed for decades. Members say it looks simple, but it takes time to learn. Curious Houstonians are always welcome to give it a try.
ASTROS GET FIRST CLOSE LOOK AT PITCHER MIKE BURROWS
⚾ The Astros got their first real look at pitcher Mike Burrows in a Houston uniform this weekend. The right-hander threw two scoreless innings in his first spring outing and filled the zone with strikes.
Burrows joined the team in a December trade after catching Houston’s attention last season. Coaches like his mix of pitches and the fire he brings to the mound. Now the Astros want to see how far he can take it this year.
