HOUSTON’S NEWS

HOUSTON RODEO BUDGET CHALLENGE: CAN YOU EAT FOR $50?

💵 The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is known for big crowds and even bigger food choices. But can you really eat there on a $50 budget? One Houston Chronicle reporter put it to the test on Opening Day to see how far the money could go.

With some price checking, the $50 covered a full lineup: a $15 pulled pork sandwich, an $8 Rusa drink, a $14.80 draft beer, a $2.87 coffee, and a $9 deep fried tres leches cake. The total came to $49.67 with tax. It turns out that while rodeo food is not cheap, a little planning can still make a rodeo food run doable without blowing the budget.

HOUSTON RODEO GOLD BUCKLE FOODIE AWARDS: THE WILD NEW FOODS THAT WON IN 2026

🐴 The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is known for big flavors, and this year’s Gold Buckle Foodie Awards showed just how creative vendors can get. The annual contest returned for its 18th year, highlighting new dishes across categories like fried food, fair food, dessert, and more.

Top winners included chicken fried lobster from Darlin’s Fried Chicken and Dubai chocolate funnel cake fries from Rousso’s Fat Bacon. Other standouts ranged from brisket cheese curd tacos to bacon jam beignets. If you are heading to the rodeo this week, these award-winning bites are a fun place to start.

TEXAS WANTS HOUSTON COMPANY TO REPAY $7M FOR TOXIC WELL CLEANUP

💰 Texas is trying to recover nearly $7 million it spent to plug a leaking Ward County well after toxic water burst to the surface in 2024. State regulators say Houston-based WaterBridge was responsible, but the company denies that claim and plans to fight it in a hearing.

The case could shape who pays when old Texas wells fail. Regulators say leaking wells are a growing problem as wastewater from oil production builds up across the state. WaterBridge says the state has not proved its well caused the blowout.

SPRING BRANCH ISD REMOVES RAMADAN DISPLAY AT BUNKER HILL ELEMENTARY

🏫 A Ramadan display at Bunker Hill Elementary School was removed Monday after Spring Branch ISD said it violated the district’s rule requiring schools to stay politically and religiously neutral. District officials said the display, created by the PTA’s cultural awareness committee, was religious in nature and had to come down after a parent complaint.

The display had marked the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. After it was removed, the PTA also chose to take down nearby Easter decorations. Some parents say the display helped students feel seen, while the district says the policy applies to all religious symbols in public schools.

SMOTHERED BREAKFAST BURRITO AT THE DAILY GRILL IN HOUSTON

I stopped by The Daily Grill at the Galleria on Westheimer for breakfast and ordered the Smothered Breakfast Burrito. Inside the flour tortilla were scrambled eggs, potatoes, smoked bacon, and mozzarella. It was topped with red sauce, queso fresco, and avocado, and came with a side of potatoes.

I went in expecting a solid breakfast, but it turned out outstanding. The eggs were soft and fluffy, the red sauce added just the right flavor, and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. Everything worked together. I might add a little more avocado and red sauce, but it was fantastic. Overall Score: 9.4/10

TEXAS A&M SPACE INSTITUTE LANDS LUNAR ROVER LEASES NEAR NASA

🚀 Texas A&M’s new Space Institute near NASA Johnson Space Center is already drawing major space companies. Intuitive Machines and Astrolab have each signed one-year leases starting Oct. 1, paying $70,833 a month for space that includes garages, project rooms, and access to a simulated lunar surface.

That matters because both companies are building lunar rovers tied to NASA’s Artemis program. With the $200 million institute set to open in October, the project is shaping up as a big piece of Houston’s growing space economy.

TEXANS KEEP TRENT BROWN AS OFFENSIVE LINE CHANGES CONTINUE

🏈 The Texans are bringing back veteran tackle Trent Brown on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million. The move comes as Houston reshapes its offensive line after agreeing to trade Tytus Howard and Juice Scruggs in separate deals.

Brown started seven games last season after returning in Week 10 from a knee issue. During Weeks 10 through 16, he allowed the sixth lowest pressure rate among right tackles with at least 200 pass blocking reps, according to Next Gen Stats.

ASTROS SPRING BREAKOUT GIVES FANS EARLY LOOK AT XAVIER NEYENS

Astros fans will get an early look at some of the club’s top young talent later this month in Florida. Houston’s Spring Breakout player pool includes 28 of the team’s top 30 prospects, including last year’s first round pick Xavier Neyens and top prospect Kevin Alvarez.

The Astros will face Marlins prospects on March 19 in West Palm Beach. Neyens is a power hitting infielder, while Alvarez stood out in his pro debut last year. It is a fun early chance to see where Houston’s next wave may be headed.
