HOUSTON’S NEWS

HOUSTON’S HOTTEST NEIGHBORHOODS AREN’T IN HOUSTON

Houston’s hottest neighborhoods are not inside the city anymore. More people are leaving and heading to nearby suburbs where homes feel more affordable and there is more space to live. Areas like Katy, Cypress, and Magnolia are growing fast as families look for better value and a quieter pace.

Some of the top places drawing buyers right now include:

Other fast-growing spots include Crosby Area, Galveston West End, Baytown, Manvel and Iowa Colony, and West of the Brazos. As home prices rise and costs like insurance climb, more Houstonians are finding their best option just outside the city.

HOUSTON CITY COUNCIL FUNDS MAJOR SAFETY AND PARK IMPROVEMENTS

Houston is putting real money into safer neighborhoods. City Council approved $4.07 million to upgrade playgrounds across five districts, $782,300 to renovate Fire Station 80, and $25.79 million to build a new South Central Police Station.

They also set aside $65,000 for pedestrian safety improvements in District C and $545,000 to upgrade firefighter radios and equipment ahead of the 2026 World Cup. These moves focus on safer parks, better emergency response, and stronger public safety across the city.

HOUSTON’S HISTORIC SILOS COULD BECOME THE CITY’S NEXT WATERWALL

Houston may soon get a striking new landmark in west Houston. A developer plans to turn the old Shadowdale grain silos into “Silo Falls,” a waterfall feature inspired by the Galleria Waterwall, as part of a 17-acre mixed use project near Beltway 8 and I-10.

The larger Silo Village plan includes apartments, retail, walking paths, and possibly a boutique hotel. If it moves forward as planned, the long-forgotten silos could trade their industrial past for a new life as one of Houston’s most eye-catching gathering spots.

HOUSTON RESIDENTS: HERE IS YOUR EMERGENCY KIT CHECKLIST

Getting prepared now can save you stress later. Harris County is encouraging residents to build an emergency kit before disaster strikes. Stocking up ahead of time is safer, easier, and helps you avoid last minute panic when storms or emergencies hit.

Start with the basics:

  • 7-day supply of non-perishable food

  • 1 gallon of water per person per day

  • Flashlights with extra batteries

  • First aid kit and medications

  • Battery powered radio or phone charger

The list also includes items for babies, pets, and hygiene. Take a few minutes now to get ready so you are not scrambling later.

HOUSTON BASKETBALL COMPETES WITH TOP TEAMS WHILE SPENDING LESS

The University of Houston is proving you do not need the biggest budget to compete. Even though the team spent about $14.6 million on men’s basketball, it still earned a No. 2 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament, outperforming several higher spending programs.

UH ranks around the middle in spending but continues to deliver strong results on the court. With rising revenue and a chance to play later tournament games at Toyota Center, the team is showing that smart strategy and strong leadership can go a long way this March.
