Houston is entering its hottest stretch of 2026 as strong high pressure settles over Texas. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s for several days, with the best chance of Houston’s first 100-degree reading coming Wednesday or Thursday.

Humidity should remain somewhat lower through Tuesday, then rise by midweek and push heat index values above 100. Rain chances later in the week depend on the path of a developing Gulf system. A closer track could bring more clouds and rain, while an offshore path would leave Houston mostly hot and dry.

An Italian appeals court has temporarily blocked the U.S. request to extradite Harris County capital murder suspect Lee Gilley. Judges in Turin want stronger guarantees that he would not face the death penalty and more details about whether a lesser charge or sentence could apply.

The U.S. government has until Aug. 31 to respond, with another hearing planned for early September. Gilley is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer, at their Heights home in 2024. He was later arrested at an airport in Milan. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Houston-area residents should check their hurricane evacuation zone before a storm threatens the coast. Officials say people in storm surge zones should leave only when local leaders order an evacuation, while residents outside those zones may be safer sheltering in place.

ZIP codes determine whether a home is in the Coastal zone or zones A through C. Knowing your zone also helps identify the correct route inland. Residents should follow local instructions and prepare to shelter for several days when no evacuation order is issued.

Mariachi Del Bosque started with four college music students in 2021 and has grown into a 14-member group. The ensemble performs monthly at Herrera’s Mexican Restaurant in The Woodlands and also plays weddings, quinceañeras and community events.

The band won first place at the Houston Rodeo Mariachi Invitational in 2025. Its members recently launched a youth camp for students ages 9 to 17, with plans to expand mariachi education and reach more communities. The group’s next Herrera’s performance is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 7 p.m.

A small plane crashed into a house near Fulshear on Monday morning, close to the Covey Trails Airstrip. The Fulshear Simonton Fire Department shared a photo showing the plane in the backyard, with a tire resting on the roof and one wing on the ground.

Texas DPS said the pilot was the only person aboard and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials had not released the pilot’s identity or the extent of the injuries. The cause of the crash was also not known.

Frank’s Grill on Mangum Road is temporarily closed after a weekend fire damaged the Houston breakfast restaurant. The business announced the closure Sunday evening and promised customers it plans to return stronger, fresher and better than before.

Video posted online showed flames and smoke at the July 18 fire. The cause had not been released. While the Mangum location is closed, its employees will work at Frank’s Grill locations on Westheimer Road and Highway 6, along with Hanz Diner Houston.

Layne’s Chicken Fingers has opened its 12th Houston-area location at 9850 Fry Road in Cypress. The restaurant held a soft opening July 17 and celebrated its grand opening July 18 in a former Zaxby’s space.

The new restaurant created more than 30 local jobs and features a large dining room with country-inspired, rustic details. Layne’s serves hand-breaded chicken tenderloin meals and scratch-made sauces. Company leaders said the growing chain plans to work with nearby schools and organizations on spirit nights and community outreach.
