Wednesday morning in Houston could start with patchy fog and a few quick showers that may slow the commute, mainly before 10 a.m. After that, the rain should fade and the day turns warm again, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s and close to 80 by Thursday.

The bigger change may come this weekend. A stronger cold front could bring rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, and that timing could affect outdoor Valentine plans. Severe weather is not expected right now, but it is a good idea to have a backup plan just in case as the forecast becomes clearer later this week.

Lunar New Year celebrations are happening all across Greater Houston, and there are plenty of ways to join the fun. The Year of the Fire Horse brings weeks of performances, crafts, and family-friendly events that highlight culture and tradition while bringing the community together.

Events run from mid-February through Feb. 22 at places like Children’s Museum Houston, The Woodlands Children’s Museum, Houston Premium Outlets, the Galleria, River Oaks District, and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center. Many events are free, while others just require regular museum admission. It is a great chance to plan a fun outing, try something new, and celebrate with friends or family.

Long before No Tsu Oh became the name of a downtown bar, it was one of Houston’s biggest celebrations. Starting in 1899, city leaders created the festival to bring attention and business to a growing Houston. For years, downtown filled with parades, elaborate floats, costumes, and crowds, all meant to show the world that the city was on the rise and ready to compete with Mardi Gras.

The celebration did not last forever. The festival was costly, and it was organized by white residents while Black Houstonians created their own event called De Ro Loc. By 1918, rising debt, growing complaints about disorder, and the approach of World War I brought the festival to an end, leaving behind a fascinating piece of Houston history.

I stopped by Akiko Sushi & Bar for an early dinner and left pretty impressed. The place was very clean, the service was friendly and attentive, and everything felt relaxed and easy from the moment I sat down.

I started with the fried calamari. It was lightly fried and delicate, which I really liked, though a few pieces were a bit chewy. The sweet chili sauce completely stole the show here. It was outstanding and made the dish much more memorable.

For sushi, the Alaska Roll was the star of the night. It has avocado and crab mix inside, topped with salmon that’s lightly baked and finished with toasted sesame seeds. The flavors worked really well together, the texture was great, and the fish tasted fresh.

I also ordered a Philadelphia Roll, which came with a generous amount of salmon and was very tasty. It’s a simple roll, but this one was done well.

Between the food, the cleanliness, and the service, it was a really enjoyable dinner overall. 8.2/10.

The Houston area’s last Alamo Drafthouse in Katy is already getting a second act. Flix Brewhouse, a dine-in movie theater chain based in Round Rock, has taken over the LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch location along with three other former Alamo theaters in Texas. The theater closed only days ago, but the lights will be back on soon.

Flix Brewhouse plans to reopen the Katy location on Feb. 23, just in time for the release of Scream 7. It brings a new movie and dining option back to the area and gives the theater a quick, fresh start.

A familiar Houston burger stop is saying goodbye. Becks Prime has closed its Westheimer and Wilcrest location after 35 years, a place the company says was filled with memories, regular customers, and everyday moments shared by the community.

There is a positive side to the news. Employees from the Wilcrest restaurant have been offered positions at other Becks Prime locations across Houston, and the brand will continue serving customers around the city. The final day of service was Sunday, Feb. 8, marking the end of a long chapter for this location.
