Houston police have charged Anthony Cerda, 34, with capital murder in the fatal assault of 90-year-old Francisco Chura. Officers found Chura unresponsive in August 2025 at an apartment on Canal Street. Investigators said he later died at a hospital on September 7.

Police said Cerda was arrested Friday, June 12, and booked into the Harris County Jail. It is a serious update in a case that began nearly 10 months ago. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Houston police have charged Letonto Gaspard, 49, after a Briarview Drive shooting incident involving an HPD officer. Police said Gaspard is charged with two misdemeanor counts of deadly conduct.

Investigators said a father and his 1-year-old son were threatened, and officers later ordered Gaspard to drop a weapon. Police said he ignored commands, pointed the gun, and was shot by an officer. He was taken to a hospital before the charges were filed. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Houston’s FIFA Fan Fest has free admission, but KPRC tracked how quickly costs can rise once families get inside. One family paid for parking, snacks, drinks, popsicles, shirts, and food, while another spent on meals and treats at the event.

The report found water stations are available, but food, drinks, and merchandise can push a day downtown into the hundreds. For families heading to the festival, a refillable water bottle and a spending plan may help.

Houston City College and Space Center Houston signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at giving students more access to space and STEM programs. Community Impact reported that the agreement includes NASA-level science, hands-on STEM workshops, astronaut presentations, and aerospace projects.

The signing was marked at HCC’s West Houston Institute. Leaders said the partnership can help connect students with camps, competitions, training, and other learning opportunities already offered through Space Center Houston. It is a strong education story with real workforce potential for the region.

Sugar Land and Missouri City have a busy summer calendar ahead, according to a new Community Impact roundup. The list includes World Cup viewing parties in Sugar Land, an art museum after-party, Juneteenth events, concerts, Fourth of July celebrations, and live performances.

A few of the bigger draws include AEW at Smart Financial Centre, Filipino singers TJ Monterde and KZ Tandingan, Red White & Boom in Sugar Land, and FourthFest in Missouri City. For residents looking for something close by, the calendar gives the southwest side plenty to work with.

Houston residents carry an average of $44,640 in non-mortgage debt, according to a LendingTree analysis reported by KPRC. The study ranked Houston as the third most debt-burdened major metro among the 50 largest U.S. metros.

The article said auto loans make up the biggest share, with the average Houston resident carrying $16,357 in auto debt. Student loans, credit cards, and personal loans also add to the total. The report pointed readers toward budgeting, lender hardship programs, and nonprofit credit counseling if debt is becoming hard to manage.

A Greater Houston roundup from Community Impact highlighted several business and growth stories across the region. One item said EVO Entertainment acquired the former Xscape Theatre property in Fulshear and plans a nearly 70,000-square-foot destination with bowling, arcade games, laser tag, climbing walls, and cinema upgrades.

The same roundup also noted a new Simply South restaurant planned for Katy and new stores coming to The Woodlands Mall. It is a useful snapshot of how the west and north sides keep adding places to eat, shop, and play.
