A tropical depression forming in the eastern Gulf is expected to become Tropical Storm Bertha. Forecasters say it will move northwest and could bring heavy rain, high surf, and gusty winds along the Gulf Coast. The center may reach Southeast Texas late Thursday or Friday.

Houston’s exact risk depends on the storm’s track. A northern path could weaken it over land, while a southern path could keep it over warm water longer. For now, forecasters expect more rain than strong wind and urge families to check basic storm supplies.

Second Baptist leaders celebrated a major court victory during Sunday worship, but some members said the long legal fight has left them hurt. A judge ruled that church autonomy prevents a civil court from deciding most claims brought by current and former members.

The lawsuit says members lost voting rights without clear notice. The group behind the case plans to appeal and still wants a full review of church finances. Some members say they may leave, while others plan to stay despite the division.

A deadly early Sunday crash left one passenger dead and an Acura driver badly hurt on the Southwest Freeway near Chimney Rock. Police said the Acura stopped on the shoulder after losing a bumper. A Ford Mustang then struck it from behind.

Investigators said the 20-year-old Mustang driver showed signs of intoxication, and police sought a warrant for a blood test. The passenger died at the scene, while the injured driver went to Ben Taub Hospital. The investigation remains open. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Pearland is entering a new chapter with Mayor Quentin Wiltz and several changes across city leadership. The city also has a new police chief, fire chief, city attorney, and assistant city manager. Many of the new leaders have already served Pearland in other roles.

Officials say fast growth is raising the need for more staff, fire stations, technology, water planning, and safe housing. Pearland’s population has grown by more than 10% since 2021. Leaders say city services must keep pace while protecting taxpayer dollars.

A woman died after a shooting Saturday afternoon in the Sheldon area of northeast Harris County. Deputies identified the victim as 41-year-old Tonya Swink. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said she was shot after an argument with a man she had been dating.

Deputies said the man was detained at the scene and later charged with murder. Investigators said he confessed during an interview, but the case must still move through the court system.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

A Magnolia area mansion recently became the community’s second-priciest home sale since 2000. The Mediterranean-style estate sits on six wooded acres near The Woodlands. It was listed for $5.9 million and sold within a reported price range topping $5 million.

The 11,490-square-foot home has seven bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, and three half bathrooms. The property also includes two ponds, a theater, a fitness studio, six fireplaces, and an elevator. The sale shows how far high-end housing has grown north of Houston.

Goodwill plans to open another store in Missouri City’s Sienna area in early October. The location at 4042 Lake Shore Harbour Boulevard will become the nonprofit’s second store in Missouri City. Another store and a donation center already operate along Highway 6.

The new location will sell gently used clothing, furniture, home goods, electronics, jewelry, books, and small items. The opening will give Sienna residents another place to shop for lower-cost goods and donate items they no longer need.
