Westside residents say hundreds of wild hogs from George Bush Park have torn up lawns in the Green Trails area. Neighbors say the rooting damage has continued for about two months. They also worry the animals could spread disease or hurt pets, children or older adults.

Harris County Precinct 4 says it manages feral hogs on public parks and land. However, county teams cannot trap animals on private property. The office urges homeowners and neighborhood groups to hire qualified wildlife contractors for safe removal. Residents say they want faster action and clearer help from county leaders.

Mattel is bringing its UNO Social Club to Dan Electro’s in the Heights on Aug. 6. The free event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and is open to guests age 21 and older. Players can gather for cards, friendly competition and a night built around the classic game.

Guests must RSVP, but a reservation does not guarantee entry. Admission will be first come, first served and depends on venue capacity. Houston is one of five cities included in the new UNO Social Club tour, which follows the program’s first event in Las Vegas last year.

Warm Gulf water is helping Tropical Storm Bertha, but forecasters say the storm is unlikely to become a hurricane. Bertha has little time left over open water, and wind shear and dry air are making it hard for the storm to organize and grow stronger.

Houston should avoid Bertha’s worst weather. Still, the system may bring higher rain chances, tropical downpours and gusty winds later this week. Forecasts show Bertha moving near southwest Louisiana before approaching Southeast Texas as a weaker system late Friday. The storm is also a good reminder to review hurricane plans and supplies.

Conroe City Council could name a new city administrator during its July 23 meeting. Members may also approve the position’s pay package. David Willard is serving as interim administrator while the council considers its next step.

The council will also discuss whether residents should vote on the city’s use of Flock Safety cameras. Staff may study whether that vote could be binding or advisory, along with the cost and timing. Other proposals include a temporary citizen committee and new rules for lot sizes, parking, open space and public notice for major housing projects.

A small plane landed on the roof of a home near Fulshear early Monday. The Piper aircraft was trying to reach a nearby grass airstrip when it struck the house in the Covey Trails neighborhood. The homeowner said the crash made a loud boom just before 6 a.m.

Firefighters found the pilot alert but trapped in the cockpit. Crews first shut off power because fuel was leaking and could have sparked a fire. The pilot went to Memorial Hermann Katy with minor injuries. No one inside the home was hurt, and the FAA is reviewing the accident.

Caring Senior Service has opened a Houston West office in Spring Valley Village. Owners Caleb Drew and Thazin Min Htet will provide non-medical home care and companionship for older adults. The office is at 5600 NW Central Drive, Suite 210.

Services include plans for clients with certain medical conditions and support designed for military veterans. The owners say they want seniors to stay independent while helping families feel less alone. Their own experience caring for aging relatives helped inspire the business. They also say caregivers should be treated with respect and clients with dignity.

Atlas has opened its third Texas cocktail bar at 729 W. 19th St. in the Heights. The new Houston location has a speakeasy feel and is designed for after-work drinks, date nights, dinner with friends and late-night visits. Reservations are not required, though guests are encouraged to arrive early.

The menu uses travel themes for drinks inspired by places such as New York, Italy, Spain and Chicago. Food choices include hummus, pretzel bites and bruschetta, along with burgers, tacos and wings. Atlas also operates locations in Fort Worth and Dallas’ Bishop Arts District.
